The Flannel

Today I want to discuss an essential piece of clothing that can upgrade your wardrobe and take it to the next level. As simplistic as it is, the flannel is an article of clothing that can add that extra flare to your outfit. There is also an abundance of different styles, textures, and thicknesses.

Before realizing the modern day impact I want to take a step back to discuss the history of the flannel. It is traced back to the 17th century, where farmers would use it to protect them from the elements. It was a woolen article, with no stylish intent.

Over time the piece of clothing started becoming especially popular in part to Hamilton Carhartt, a brand you may recognize today as “Carharrt”. Still maybe not for fashion purposes, but the intent of his flannels were for blue collar workmen that displayed topnotch quality. Fast-forwarding until the early 90’s this was a staple look in the grunge community as it continued to develop more from a workpiece to an aesthetic.

Today you can see the flannel dressed in a multitude of ways. You are able to throw on a complimentary flannel to coincide with the shirt you are wearing and it provides that extra layer to style your outfit.

A personal favorite of my mine is when individuals wear a flannel over a jacket. Oftentimes this is used when the weather is colder and you want to be stylish while adding a coat of warmth. You are able to develop an aesthetic with this versatility of the flannel and can overall pull and outfit together. The Trend Spotter talks more in depth in different ways to style it.

I would recommend this piece of clothing to anyone trying early to start their wardrobe. You are able to find this piece essentially everywhere and it is affordable at its most basic unit.
